Best Practices for Pedestrian Safety
Use Designated Crosswalks
- Cross only at marked crosswalks or intersections whenever possible.
- Avoid crossing in the middle of the street or between parked vehicles.
- Many of our crosswalks feature pedestrian-activated flashing lights; press the button, wait for the signal to begin flashing, and then cross when it is safe.
Obey Traffic Signals
- Cross only when the pedestrian signal indicates it is safe to do so.
- If a signal includes a countdown or flashing hand, do not begin crossing.
- Always allow sufficient time to cross completely before traffic resumes.
Stay Alert and Don’t Walk Distracted
- Do not look at your phone or other electronic devices while crossing.
- Avoid texting, reading, or using headphones in both ears when near or crossing roads.
- Stay aware of your surroundings at all times. Make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the crosswalk.
Be Visible, Especially at Night
- Wear bright or reflective clothing during evening and early morning hours.
- Carry a flashlight or use a clip-on light to improve visibility.
- Walk on sidewalks whenever they are available. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic and as far from vehicles as possible.
Be Predictable and Cautious
- Don’t assume a driver sees you; make eye contact before crossing.
- Walk, don’t run, across streets.
- Always look left, right, and left again before stepping into the street.
Teach and Model Safe Habits for Children
- Accompany young children and teach them safe crossing behavior.
- Instruct children to cross only at corners or designated crosswalks.
- Encourage children to stay focused and avoid distractions while walking near traffic.
Use Pedestrian Beacons
Summit has installed several pedestrian-activated flashing beacon systems throughout the city, including:
- Morris Avenue & Butler Parkway
- Springfield Avenue & Maple Street
- River Road & Passaic Avenue
To use: press the activation button and wait for the lights to begin flashing. This alerts approaching drivers to stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk.
