The City of Summit holds a silver level certification from Sustainable Jersey. The city has achieved Sustainable Jersey certification in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2017, 2019 and 2022. Summit will be applying for certification again in 2025. The process is led by the Environmental Commission and is the culmination of a lengthy effort to document programs and policies in Summit that aim to reduce waste, cut greenhouse gas emissions, stimulate local economies, and increase resiliency and progress toward an equitable society.

In the last certification process in 2022, Summit received 620 points from 50 separate actions. The major categories in which Summit was awarded points include Waste Management (110 points); Public Information and Engagement, and Emergency Management and Resiliency (85 points); and Natural Resources (80 points). The additional 345 points were spread across 11 additional categories.

The city will apply for many of these same points in 2025 and will also include newer initiatives such as the revision of the Environmental Resource Inventory, expected municipal energy efficiency audits and recent collaborations, such as the Native Seed Library at the Summit Free Public Library and the partnership with BookSmiles for Book Barn overflow at the Transfer Station.
