[ARCHIVED] Participate in MLK Day of Justice, Equality and Service on 1/20/2020

mlk day of service

The City of Summit has announced more than 20 community events as part of its twenty-second annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of justice, equality and service to others on Monday, January 20, 2020.  Summit’s annual day of service has been expanded to include discussions on community building and present day struggles against racism and injustice.

The Annual MLK Day of justice, equality and service to others is organized and run by Shaping Summit Together, a 501(c)3 organization consisting of community agencies, individuals, houses of worship and non-profits dedicated to ensuring that Summit stakeholders work together to help Summit reach its full potential as a mature, diverse, suburban community.

“This is an opportunity not only to volunteer and make a difference in our community but to learn about and discuss racism, inequality and how it impacts us all,” explains Summit Mayor Nora Radest. “Event organizers have expanded the mission of Summit’s MLK Day to be more in sync with the teachings of social justice and equality that Dr. King advocated during his life.”

Mayor Radest is inviting individuals, non-profit and service organizations, and community groups to sign up to participate. Activities will be held at various locations throughout Summit; many organizations are still accepting donations and volunteers. Radest continues: “When neighbors come together to give just a few hours of their time to improve our community, it has a significant impact. There is a full day of activities being planned for everyone. I hope you will join us.”
