The City of Summit Engineering Division is providing an update on the new traffic pattern on Briant Parkway.

The city recently implemented a temporary one-way traffic pattern on Briant Parkway, which was scheduled to take place from Tuesday, August 22, 2023, until Tuesday, September 19, 2023. At this time, based on feedback received from affected property owners as well an assessment performed by the Summit Police Department, Engineering Division, and the city’s traffic consultant, the trial will be extended indefinitely while the departments continue to monitor the impact to traffic from this change.

The Engineering Division anticipates the current temporary conditions (traffic drums, signs, etc.) to remain until Wednesday, November 15, 2023, when a semi-permanent solution will be installed. The division is continuing to work on a plan to implement the new traffic pattern permanently.

The following options are currently being considered:

  • Signal modifications at the Morris Ave/Orchard Street intersection to include a left turn lane onto Orchard Street,
  • Pavement markings and signage on Briant Parkway,
  • Roadway narrowing, and
  • Traffic calming measures such as bump outs, speed humps, or raised intersections.

The Engineering Division will provide updates as further options are explored and plans are generated. Currently, there is no timeline for the permanent change as some additional modifications may require funding and other agency approvals.

Residents may submit questions or additional feedback to the City Engineer, Aaron Schrager, at aschrager@cityofsummit.org or the Assistant City Engineer, Sam Koutsouris, at skoutsouris@cityofsummit.org, 908-273-6404.
