The City of Summit is proud to announce the appointment of Timothy Digney and Michael Tomich as career firefighters with the Summit Fire Department. Both were sworn in by Mayor Elizabeth Fagan on July 17 at a special ceremony held at the City of Summit firehouse, with family, friends, and fellow firefighters in attendance.

These appointments mark a milestone for the department. One fills a position left vacant by the passing of a valued team member. The second fills a newly created position, the first new career firefighter position added to the Summit Fire Department in more than 40 years.

“This is a moment of pride for Summit,” said Mayor Fagan. “We’re welcoming two individuals who have already demonstrated outstanding commitment to fire service through volunteerism and training. We’re also honoring the legacy of those who served before them and looking forward to the department’s future.”

Timothy Digney began serving as a volunteer with the Summit Fire Department in August 2024, assigned to the Chemical Engine division. He has also been an active member of the Garwood Volunteer Fire Department since June 2021. Tim has completed Firefighter I and II training and brings with him a strong foundation in fire service education and field experience.

Certifications:

  • Hazmat Material: Awareness
  • Hazardous Material: Operations Core
  • Hazmat: Operational Competencies
  • Traffic Incident Management
  • IAAI – Transmissions, Exhaust, Brake & Accessory Systems
  • IAAI – The Engine and Ignition, Electrical and Fuel Systems

Michael Tomich joined the Summit Fire Department as a volunteer in August 2024 and served with the Hook and Ladder division. He has been an active member of the Berkeley Heights Volunteer Fire Department since 2021 and has completed Firefighter I and II training.

Certifications:

  • Hazmat Operations
  • Hazmat Awareness
  • Hazmat Technician
  • Rope Rescue Operations
  • MCFA Truck, Engine & Rescue Operations

The swearing-in ceremony was held at Summit’s new firehouse, located at 281 Broad Street, adding even more meaning to the event. Both appointments reflect the City of Summit’s investment in public safety and commitment to building a strong and well-equipped fire service team.

“These firefighters bring impressive dedication and credentials to their new roles,” said Summit Fire Chief Eric Evers. “We are proud to officially welcome them to our team of career professionals. Their training, character, and experience will strengthen our department and benefit the entire community.”
