At its Tuesday, October 8, meeting, Summit Common Council unanimously elected Mike McTernan to serve as Council President for the remainder of 2024.

“On behalf of the council, I thank Delia for stepping forward and presiding over the past two council meetings in her capacity as Council President Pro Tempore during this period of transition,” said Mayor Elizabeth Fagan after the council meeting. “She did a great job, and it is gratifying to know we have so many members of council who take the position as seriously as Delia does.” Mayor Fagan adds, “We are also excited to see Mike returning to a role he knows well and expect the usual great things from his leadership.”

“This is a tremendous vote of confidence in me by my colleagues and I am honored,” said McTernan. “We are all working our hardest for the best possible Summit, and I promise you I will do my best for all of you.”

McTernan was appointed to the position of Ward 2 Common Councilmember in September, filling the vacancy created when former Council President Lisa Allen resigned.

McTernan previously served as a councilmember in Ward 1 from 2014 to 2019 and as Council President during 2016 and 2017. During this time, he chaired the Finance and Personnel Committee, Public Works Committee, Administrative Committee, and served on the Safety Committee and Law Committee. He was a liaison to the Joint Meeting of Union and Essex County, the Historic Preservation Committee, Summit Downtown Inc., Summit Public Art, the Field User Committee, and the Parking Advisory Committee.
