The City of Summit Office of Health & Vital Statistics is sharing information on animal license renewals.

The deadline to renew dog and cat licenses is June 2, 2025. Renewals received after the June 2nd deadline will incur a late fee of $10.00. There is no late fee for first time registration.

Applications can be submitted online using the portals for dog licenses and cat licenses. After approving the application, a member of the Health Department will send the applicant a payment request by email. Online payments must be made by credit card.

Residents who do not wish to use the online portal may print out an application and mail it to the Health Department or submit it in-person at 512 Springfield Avenue in Summit, NJ, 07901. Acceptable forms of payment in-person are cash or check made payable to City of Summit.

Proof of rabies vaccination must accompany an application. The State Health Department allows a two-month grace period for rabies immunity; therefore, the rabies vaccination must be valid through March 31, 2026. Please note, the Summit Dog & Cat Hospital is no longer providing free rabies vaccinations for Summit residents’ dogs and cats.

For medical reasons, some pets are given a one-year inoculation that may not cover the registration period. In this case, your veterinarian should complete the Certificate of Exemption from Rabies Vaccination form. Residents should submit the completed form to the Health Department with their pet’s license renewal.

All animals should be registered within 10 days of moving to Summit or reaching the licensing age. However, a current license from another New Jersey municipality is accepted as compliance. When that license expires, the animal must be licensed in Summit.

State law requires every dog that has either reached the age of seven months or has a set of permanent teeth must be licensed. By local ordinance, all cats are required to be licensed at seven months of age.

Please contact the Office of Health & Vital Statistics at 908-277-6464 with any questions about licensing or rabies vaccinations.
