On Saturday, December 30, at approximately 0428 hours a Summit Police Officer conducting residential patrol located an unoccupied black Kia Rio with the doors ajar running idle in the middle of Hillcrest Ave. near Bellevue Ave. The vehicle was determined to be stolen and was subsequently impounded. The officer searched the area for potential suspect(s) but was unable to locate them and did not find anything else out of the ordinary.
On Saturday, December 30, at approximately 1436 hours the Summit Police Department received information that a 2021 grey BMW X5 registered out of Hillcrest Ave. in Summit was observed traveling at a high rate of speed in Newark. The department contacted the owner, who informed police they were unaware the vehicle was taken and believe it was left unlocked with the key fob inside.
Information shared through local, county, and state law enforcement entities suggests that although high-end vehicles continue to be a prime target for criminals, several models of BMW’s, including the X Series and Alpina editions, have been prioritized these last few weeks.
The Summit Police Department continues to make every effort to address these concerning events through a variety of proactive and investigatory policing measures. Please remain vigilant, secure your vehicles and homes, and continue to report suspicious activity.
Anyone with surveillance footage of possible suspects in the area overnight should contact the Summit Police Department Detective Bureau at (908) 273-0051.
