November 9, 2023 - At approximately 3:55PM on Sunday, November 5, 2023, Summit Police Department received a report of a dispute in progress at a Canoe Brook Parkway residence. The victim, Summit Common Councilmember Andrew Minegar, stated that he had been canvassing for the November 7 election when he was verbally confronted by Robert Laudati, a 58-year-old male Chatham resident, in the driveway of a home on Canoe Brook Parkway that is owned by Laudati’s parents.
Councilmember Andrew Minegar explained that after walking halfway up the driveway, he encountered Laudati who asked him to leave the property stating that his family did not want to be bothered by Minegar or support his political party. According to Councilmember Minegar, he left the property immediately and walked next door to speak to residents there. Laudati followed Councilmember Minegar onto the neighboring property telling him not to bother them either because it was a Sunday. Laudati became physically aggressive, pushing Minegar and knocking his mobile phone from his hands multiple times while the councilmember was recording the encounter. He also allegedly threw Minegar’s campaign materials into a nearby wooded area.
Councilmember Minegar was not injured during the incident. After a follow up investigation by the Detective Bureau, Laudati was being charged with simple assault; a summons was mailed on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, to his Chatham, NJ address.
