HEAT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM EDT THURSDAY

Heat index values in the upper 90s to near 100 are expected. Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk. Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures.

For those needing a break from the heat, the Summit Free Public Library on 75 Maple St. is open on Wednesday, September 6 and Thursday, September 7 from 9AM to 9PM. The Summit Community Center on 100 Morris Ave. and City Hall on 516 Springfield Ave are open from 8:30AM to 4:30PM on those days as well.

Use air conditioning to stay cool at home or go to a place with air conditioning. Check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest periods in shaded or air-conditioned environments.

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency. In cases of heat stroke call 9 1 1.
