At approximately 9:25PM on Sunday, June 11, the Summit Police Department responded to a report of a suspicious male attempting to open a vehicle parked in a driveway on Debary Place.

A responding police unit observed a dark colored 2016 Lexus RX350 occupied by two males traveling south at a high rate of speed on Hobart Avenue near Whittredge Road. As the officer pursued the vehicle, it continued at a high rate of speed on Hobart Avenue. The vehicle lost control and crashed in front of 40 Franklin Place. Both suspects fled the vehicle, running to the rear of the property. Police units set up a perimeter and began a search for the suspects. The Union County Sherriff’s Office K-9 unit and an officer from the Milburn Police Department, equipped with a drone, responded to a request for assistance with the search.

Approximately 45 minutes later the suspects were apprehended without incident behind Summit Truck & Auto Body at 48 Franklin Place. It was later discovered that the suspect vehicle, which was displaying fake NJ license plates, had been reported stolen in the state of Florida.

The following individuals were arrested:

• The driver of the vehicle, Chris A. Clement, 18, of East Orange, was charged with receiving stolen property, reckless driving, and numerous motor vehicle violations. Following processing, he was released on recognizance, pending a court date.
• The 17-year-old passenger of East Orange was charged with receiving stolen property. Following processing, the individual was released on recognizance to their guardian, pending a court date.
