This is Mayor Nora Radest with an important message from the City of Summit.
Citywide recycling will be collected tomorrow. Please put recycling at the curb by 6AM Thursday morning. If your street is closed, please consider delivering it to the Summit Transfer Station. If you would like to have your recycling picked up once your street is reopened, go to the city website and click on Report a Concern to create a pickup request or call 908-273-6404. Please do this after your street has reopened.
An outdoor charging station has been setup in the Broad Street east parking lot (adjacent to the Broad Street parking garage). Residents may charge electronic devices from 8:30AM to 9PM on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. A second charging station will open tomorrow at the Summit Community Center from 5 to 9PM Thursday and Friday. If power outages continue, and we hope they will not, weekend hours will be established for both charging station locations. Power strips are provided. Please bring your own charging cord and adapter. Face masks are required and people are asked to maintain a social distance of six feet from one another.
Collection of storm debris will begin this Friday and continue next week according to garbage collection days and routes.
I know how extremely frustrated everyone is with this power outage especially in light of all the hardship we have endured since March. Please do not doubt for one moment, that I am strongly advocating for the restoration of power to Summit residents as soon as possible.
Earlier today, I participated in a conference call with JCP&L to understand how it plans to restore service. It is repairing high-voltage substation damage to re-energize transmission lines and then determine problems along distribution lines that run along city streets.
JCP&L says that it expects to have 90% of customers back in service in a few days. This is not the answer we wanted. I am insisting that we receive restoration times tonight and we will share them with you as soon as we get them.
Go to https://www.cityofsummit.org for a list of locations where JCP&L is providing free ice and water, generator safety guidelines from the Summit Fire Department, and more.
Thank you.
