[ARCHIVED] Update on steps being taken to address bus shelter issue

Over the past few months, I have received numerous expressions of concern from residents regarding the situation of our food insecure and homeless populations in Summit and specifically the men camped out in the bus shelters. I share your concerns and am actively working with the Summit Police Department, local non-profit organizations, churches, and social service agencies to secure resources and find a comprehensive and compassionate solution for these residents.

I want to clarify that while I have instructed the police to terminate power in the bus shelters, it is under the strict understanding that no one will be evicted or displaced without being provided with a viable alternative unless they are breaking the law. The purpose of this action is to discourage the use of bus shelters as a long-term solution, but it is not meant to further exacerbate the hardships of our fellow citizens.

Please be assured that our ultimate goal is to provide adequate housing, food, and services for those in need.

As a community, we have an obligation to look out for one another, especially during difficult times. I urge all Summit residents to join me in promoting a spirit of compassion and empathy for those who are struggling. Together, we can ensure that everyone in Summit has the opportunity to thrive.
